I'm 14 and want to start ballet again, and possible go pro, is it to late?

I'm 14 and used to do ballet when i was 3-8. This may not sound like much but i was constantly told by teachers and professional dancers that I was extremely gifted and was put in a class with 12-13 year olds to challenge me. It's been six years since dancing and I would like to start again (this time ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, and hip-hop) and i was wondering if its to late to go pro and be excepted into a school of ballet and become a prima ballerina.

I think it's great that you wish to learn so many dance styles. Diversity in dance training is one of the many paths that can lead to a professional performing career, especially on the commercial side of the dance biz. However, I hope you realize that the elite ballet schools that produce over 90% of professional ballet dancers don't offer the line-up of dance styles that you'd like to take. For one, I doubt you'd find any professional who took lyrical after the age of 14, as it is not considered a serious dance style. And then since hip-hop is not grounded in the ballet vocabulary and draws from totally different roots, at best it would be considered a frivolous "extra" and, at worse, an interference to building top-notch ballet technique. If you doubt what I'm saying, simply check out the bios of the dancers at any professional ballet company to see where they have trained, and then look up those dance schools to see what classes they offer.

Right now, you're at the crossroads in determining which path you wish to pursue in dance. If you really want to give the pro ballet route a fair shot, then you'll need to jump into a bare minimum of 12 hours of ballet technique classes a week right now. You can add a class of jazz and/or modern if you'd like, as pre-professional 14 year olds should be taking a minimum of 15 hours a week of classes (not counting rehearsals). By December, you'll need to be ready to audition for summer programs, as their audition tours start in early January. Most elite ballet schools use their summer programs to evaluate potential candidates to their year-round programs.

However, if you choose to attend a dance studio where you take a bit of everything or which places a lot of emphasis on rehearsing routines for competitions, you'll be choosing a different professional career path that won't include being in a ballet company. You will still need to dance year-round by attending summer programs. Some competition studios continue competing during the summer. Meanwhile, you might also wish to start checking out college dance programs to further your diverse dance training, as it takes a lot of legwork to go see college dance performances first-hand to get a sense of what appeals to you.

I'd advise you to check out "Ballet Talk for Dancers" for tons of information on pre-professional ballet training:

14 to some would be getting there, but not too old YET.

just throw yourself into it, and practice practice practice.
its never too late. it will be hard getting back into that shape you were in when you danced but anything is possible. Some professionals didnt even start until they were teenagers!!
Not to late if you practice hard. If you want it hard enough you could
No way! It's not too late. I had a teacher who started at 17 years old and she is soooo awesome! Go for it, be persistent, and no matter what: DONT GIVE UP.
Definitely go for it and just practice and stay with it. You'll be able to get there if you just try and really want it. =)
of course u can try to go pro. i mean, u were talented when u took dance when u were young. look at Sabra the girl who won So You Think You Can Dance, shes only been dancin for 4 yrs!. its not too late if u work hard and are dedicated!
